Family Violence advocates call to end Smoke and Mirrors

19 September 2024

No to Violence welcomes parliamentary scrutiny of the Albanese Government’s recent Family Violence funding package.

“We understand the Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, Senator Kerryn Liddle will be using Parliament to call for greater transparency and accountability for the government’s cuts to funding under the Family Violence National Partnership Agreement,” said No to Violence CEO Phillip Ripper.

“The 12.5% cut to Commonwealth contribution to the National Family Violence Partnership Agreement was hidden behind the funding announcement for state based legal aid services.”

“Under the new Family Violence National Partnership Agreement, the Commonwealth’s contribution will shrink from a paltry average funding of $80 million per annum to $70 million.”

“This cut in funding will be locked in for the next five years unless urgent action is taken now.”

“The Commonwealth’s cut to funding under the Family Violence National Partnership Agreement will have a direct impact on front line services working with men to end their use of violence and those working to with women and children in response and recovery efforts across Australia”.

NTV understands that Teal Independents including Zoe Daniels and others are also seeking clarification and greater transparency.

No to Violence has written to the Prime Minister, with Minister Rishworth and Assistant Minister Elliot to seek further clarification around the funding announcements and is yet to receive a response.
