Federal Election campaign update no 6

Dear valued colleague,

Clear themes are emerging as analysis pours in dissecting the thumping Liberal Party loss over the weekend. People resoundingly rejected the divisive politics which became a part of Dutton’s brand. They also want a stronger and clearer plan for a positive future.

As the re-elected Labor government get ready to re-enter leadership with a mandate for their policy platform it is time to make sure they heard us loud and clear – domestic, family and sexual violence must be a priority in this term of government.

There is much to do:

  • Supporting the First Nations Family Safety Plan to succeed
  • Negotiating a strong and impactful Second Action Plan under the National Plan to End Gender Based Violence
  • Following through on commitments to step up responses for children and young people
  • Stopping violence at its source through stronger practice approaches and strategic coordination.

This Labor government must support the solutions we know work instead of re-inventing the wheel yet again. Funding levels must match the scale of the crisis we are responding to. The domestic, family and sexual violence must be recognised as critical for the safety of families and strength of communities.

The Labor Party committed to:

  • Action on systems-enabled financial abuse
  • $85 million to trial a domestic violence threat assessment model
  • $8.6 million to expand the Innovative Perpetrator Response
  • $21.4 million to trial specialist sexual assault legal services
  • $80 million to child-centric trauma responses
  • $20m for a trauma recovery centre on NSW’s Central Coast

We want stronger systems where victim-survivors are supported to be safe, recover and heal. These commitments are a step in the right direction but much more is needed.

Your voice has been crucial in calling for stopping violence at its source. 100 organisations and 30 individuals have signed a joint letter, demanding more from the incoming government. It’s not too late for you to join them – send your name or logo to communications@ntv.org.au

Let us know what you thought of the campaign – if your organisation or you are a No to Violence member or if you have just joined our movement to end men’s violence

We have proven that we are powerful when we come together. No to Violence will keep showing up alongside our colleagues and supporters and calling for the changes we need to end violence.
