Support for men worried about their behaviour following ex-tropical Cyclone Alfred

18 March 2025

Flooding caused by ex-tropical Cyclone Alfred was extensive, and many communities in northern NSW and south-east Queensland continue to face challenges. Many people are still in emergency accommodation or facing a huge clean up.

Recovery for many people and communities will take time. While circumstances like these understandably bring up a range of stresses, there is no excuse for violence or abuse.

If you are worried about your behaviour at this time, or you are worried about a man in your life, the Men’s Referral Service can help.

Natural disasters and domestic and family violence

Research has shown that family violence often increases during and after natural disasters. The stress, loss, and disruption caused by such events can add to other ongoing issues and contribute to harmful behaviours including patterns of control, abuse and violence.

As a man you may feel a pressure from within yourself or from others to behave a certain way or be a stereotypical male in the face of the challenges ahead. This includes remaining stoic, handling stress on your own, feeling the need to take control, or feeling like you can’t reach out for support. These feelings can contribute to behaviours that are abusive or violent – and this is not OK.

Using control and violence is a choice, and there are better choices you can make in your family and relationships.

Recognising when you are struggling and seeking help is a sign of strength. An indication that you are trying to be the best man, partner, father or family member you can be.

By reaching out for support, you can find healthier, more respectful ways to cope with your emotions and stress, ultimately protecting your loved ones and yourself.
